Pain

Of all the conditions acupuncture is effective in treating, it is most known in the West for it’s use in pain relief. The majority of our patients first come to our clinic seeking acupuncture for pain management, and we have successfully treated many conditions from head to toe, acute and chronic. (Some cases of pain relief by acupuncture)

Modern Research
Up to the present, only a few modern research studies have been done on acupuncture in treating pain, but these studies have shown its effectiveness for the following conditions
  • osteoarthritis knee pain
  • low back pain
  • neck pain
  • headache

How does Acupuncture Treat Pain?
In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture promotes Qi (energy) and blood flow in the body, removes any blockages, and balances the meridians. As a result, pain goes away.

According to the modern researches that have been done so far, the action mechanisms of acupuncture include
  • endogenous release of natural opioid peptides includin endorphins, dynorphins and encephalins, all of which block the pain
  • endogenous release of corticosteroid for local inflammation
  • induced relaxation of stuck myofibrils within tissue planes
  • increased local blood flow of the affected area

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Pain
Chinese herbal medicine, whether used by itself or in conjunction with acupuncture, is also very effective in treating pain, especially pain that is caused by internal conditions. For example:
  • Chest pain due to coronary heart disease
  • Stomach pain due to gastritis, irritated stomach
  • Abdominal pain due to colitis, menstrual cycle, etc
  • Pelvic pain due to pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, etc
  • Bladder pain due to interstitial cystitis, bladder infection and bladder stones
  • Joint pain due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis
  • Fibromylgia
