According to the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine, menopausal women have deficiency in the Kidney system (Water). Kidney Yin deficiency results in a lot of "heat" symptoms, such as hot flashes, hot sensation in hands and feet, irritability, urinary tract infections, vaginal infection and etc. Kidney Yang deficiency results in fatigue. The treatment principle is to tonify Kidney, especially Kidney Yin. The tonification can be achieved by either acupuncture or Chinese herbal medicine.

The classical herbal formulas used for Kidney Yin tonification are Liu Wei Di Huang Wan and Zuo Gui Wan, both having been in use for over a thousand years.
